Zonulin（连蛋白）是一种参与上皮和内皮屏障功能调节的蛋白质，对肠粘膜细胞紧密连接的调节对于维持屏障内环境的平衡至关重要，zonulin是目前唯一已知的细胞间紧密连接的生理调节剂，参与大分子的运输和耐受/免疫反应平衡。当连蛋白与肠的上皮细胞结合时，会诱导信号级联。这种级联分解了肠壁的细胞旁紧密连接。肠壁的紧密连接是允许分子从肠腔转移到血流的两种方式之一，反之亦然。当肠道中的连蛋白水平增加并失去平衡时，这些连接点会打开得更宽，并保持更长时间。这些加宽的入口点允许较大的大分子进入血液或肠腔。通过这些缺口的分子可以增加身体的自然免疫反应，引起炎症和一些自身免疫性疾病。
