Measurement of Adipose Tissue Blood Flow

Adipose tissue (AT) is a well-vascularized tissue with a capillary density corresponding to that of skeletal muscle. The blood supply to the tissue is tightly coordinated with the tissue metabolism. AT blood flow (BF) is increased during exercise and starvation, i.e., in situations in which fat is mobilized from the tissue. The BF is also increased during fat deposition, especially after food intake, which coinsides with the idea that the increase in BFw in these situations is necessary either to carry nonesterified fatty acid mobilized during lipolysis away from the tissue or to supply lipoprotein-trigylcerol (TAG), especially very low density lipoprotein-TAG, to the tissue during lipid depositions.
