Apoptosis is a morphologically distinct form of programmed cell death. It has a role in such processes as embryogenesis, immune regulation, and defense against viruses, and can also be induced by a variety of physical and chemical stimuli (1 ). Importantly apoptosis leads to the safe removal of cells by phagocytosis, whereas in contrast, necrosis provokes tissue injury and inflammation.
